Puyo Puyo Tetris Is Frenetic Fun

Talk about a match made in heaven.

SEGA’s Puyo Puyo Tetris, for Nintendo Switch, is a four-player tile-matching mash up of fast-paced play. Though similar in nature, Puyos and Tetriminos stack and clear differently, making the game a beautiful blend of two classic puzzle games.  Puyo Puyo Tetris features a number of different ways to play, which is what makes it so endlessly entertaining. In Adventure mode, players can experience the story and learn more about the worlds of Puyo Puyo and Tetris. This is a good place to start if you’re new to one or both of the games. Here, kids can get to know Ringo Amitie, Arle, and Carbuncle, and travel through the story mode with them. As they progress through each chapter, they can battle opponents, sharpen their stacking skills, earn credits, and unlock new stages to explore. In Solo Arcade, kids can play against the computer, as well as in special solo challenge modes. There are six different ways to play in this mode, giving single players a nice variety to choose from.

For a mild game, players can start with Versus mode, which lets them play a classic tile-stacking match featuring either Puyo Puyo or Tetris pieces.

In Fusion mode, both Puyos and Tetriminos rain down into the same puzzle field. It’s more challenging, but it allows players to mix chains when clearing consecutive lines.

During a Swap game, players—based on their choosing—play either Puyo Puyo or Tetris at the start of the match. After a set amount of time, both puzzle boards get switched out for a new one of the opposite game type, leaving players to handle an unfamiliar board without time to prepare. It’s fast-paced and keeps players on their feet.Other Solo Arcade modes include Party, Big Bang, and Challenge, all of which add more to the action and test players’ abilities. There are even six more modes within Challenge mode that introduce tiny Puyo, endless Puyo, and other unique objectives to keep pushing players outside of the comfort zone of a classic match. Party is wildly fun, and includes twists like endless lives and not being able to rotate certain Tetriminos.

When kids link up with friends, they can enjoy Multiplayer Arcade mode together. Here, gamers can challenge their friends and enjoy local multiplayer battles on a single Nintendo Switch using the Joy-Con controllers, or they hash it out using their own consoles.Puyo Puyo Tetris also offers online gameplay, so kids can duel with players from all over the world, see where they stand in the global rankings, and watch uploaded replays of their best (or worst) games. They can also utilize the in-game lesson manual, which features tips and insight on how to rise to the top of the standings.

Fans of numbers can even view their game stats for each and every mode within Puyo Puyo Tetris to get a visual of their skills. Here, they can also view story scenes, listen to audio, and watch replays of some of their best games. There are customization options too, like the ability to switch the background stage, or the option of choosing how the Puyo Puyo and Tetriminos look.

Puyo Puyo Tetris will be available on Nintendo Switch on April 25.
