As Black History Month, February is the perfect time to uplift diverse Black voices. CAMP toy stores are celebrating this occasion by hosting free pop-up storytime events all month long. Stop by your local CAMP store to hear CAMP Counselors read stories written by Black authors. CAMP has a wide selection of children’s books that celebrate Black lives this Black History Month. Here are a few!

Basketball Dreams ($18.99) tells the story of a young boy who aspires to play professional basketball and gets advice from his beloved grandfather, Papa Chilly. Written by NBA All-Star Chris Paul, this book doesn’t only teach about putting in dedication on the court, but also about respect, faith, kindness, and determination off the court. Papa Chilly’s lessons served as inspiration for Chris, propelling him to NBA stardom.

Another captivating children’s book that is perfect for Black History Month is Angela Joy’s debut Black is a Rainbow Color ($9.00). In this story, a kid reflects on the meaning of being Black, from the culture of a growing and thriving community to the history of people who changed the world. Illustrated by Caldecott Honoree and Coretta Scott King Award winner Ekua Holmes, this book is an unforgettable, powerful anthem for kids ages 4-8.

Antiracist Baby ($8.99) gives babies ages 0-3 nine easy steps for building a more equitable world. The book introduces the concept of antiracism through bold illustrations and playful text, providing the right tools to begin such critical conversations at the earliest ages.

The third picture book adaptation of one of Bob Marley’s songs, Get Up, Stand Up ($8.50) has timely messages of peace, love, and truth. The story follows a young girl in school who encounters several instances of teasing and intimidation. However, with kindness and courage, she is able to make things right for herself and others. Ideal for kids ages 6-8, the book features vibrant pictures by John Jay Cabuay accompanied by Marley’s iconic lyrics.
