Madam C. J. Walker is joining the Barbie Inspiring Women Series, a collection of dolls based on historical role models who paved the way for females to dream big.
The entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political and social activist was born Sarah Breedlove in 1867 on a Delta, Louisiana cotton plantation. As the daughter of parents who were formerly enslaved and later became sharecroppers, Walker wouldn’t let anyone hold her back. She became a successful entrepreneur manufacturing hair and beauty products for Black women that made her the nation’s first documented self-made female millionaire.
Barbie honors her with a collectible doll modeled after her. The doll features a full-length turquoise skirt and a purple blouse with floral print and ruffle details. It comes with a “Madam C.J. Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower” accessory.
Mattel continues to dedicate resources to directly impact the Black community through the Dream Gap Project Fund, with a commitment to highlight more Black female role models. The Inspiring Women Series features a diverse lineup of women, including Ida B Wells, Dr. Maya Angelou, Dr. Jane Goodall, Helen Keller, Eleanor Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, Katherine Johnson, Frida Kahlo, Rosa Parks, Sally Ride, Billie Jean King, Ella Fitzgerald, Florence Nightingale, and Susan B. Anthony.
