Make sure you’re stocked up on snacks because the world’s mightiest superheroes are coming over for game night!

A classic card game from Mattel is getting a heroic glow-up with UNO Ultimate Marvel. Recommended for kids ages 7 and up, this new version of UNO comes with four separate character decks featuring Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Iron Man, and Thor. Each player will take on one of those Marvel identities to match colors, numbers, and symbols, just like in a regular UNO game — but with the addition of special powers and cards designed specifically for those characters. The game also features a danger deck with event cards and enemy cards that add even more excitement and powers to the game, making players feel like they’re in a battle worthy of any Avengers movie.

The game is designed for 2-4 players and you will need a good amount of surface area on which to arrange the multiple character decks. Players will form a hand with seven cards from their character deck with the goal of either being the first to get rid of all the cards in their hand or being the last player with cards left in their character deck. During each turn, players may use a card from their hand or draw a card to match the top card of the discard pile by color, number, or symbol; activate their character powers to make a special move; defeat enemies; and resolve any effects from attacking enemies, events, action cards, the danger deck, or opponents’ character powers. If your character deck ever runs out of cards, you get kicked out of the game.

The character-specific powers make the game more exciting, especially for Marvel fans. Black Panther can recover cards by defeating enemies, Iron Man can burn cards from other players’ decks, and both Captain Marvel and Thor can change the active colors of cards in different ways. These special abilities give the game more play value because players can take on different identities and try out new strategies.

You can’t have superheroes without villains to balance it all out, and this version of UNO has enemy cards to add a little spice. When a player draws an enemy card, it represents a villain attacking their Marvel hero. Some of the enemies include Loki, Ronan, Skrulls, Destroyer, Killmonger, M.O.D.O.K., a Hydra Agent, and Madam Masque, to name a few. These cards give instructions about what to do when that card comes into play, special rules players must follow while that enemy is attacking, and how to defeat them. For example, when Loki makes his way into the game, players must reverse the order of play, the current player is banned from playing reverse cards while attacking, and that player must play a green or a red card to defeat him.

The danger deck is made up of enemy cards and event cards, which immediately force one or more players to take an action, such as adding or burning cards from their hand or skipping someone’s turn. The danger deck adds an element of surprise into the gameplay, like players are in combat with characters they know and love (or hate).

Marvel fans will also love the collectibility factor. Each UNO Ultimate core package comes with its own set of four foil cards featuring different characters and rarities. These foil cards are collectible versions of the wild cards and character cards, and they come in blind bags so players won’t know which ones they are going to get. Fans can find them in other UNO Ultimate games, add-on packs, and even specially marked classic UNO packages. Kids can either collect them or swap them out with the non-foil versions of the cards to create a flashy foil deck.
