I love a good round of trivia. Even better is a game of Mad Libs. So testing out the Smart! Game and Silly Sentence Word Fun, from the Brain Quest line from University Games, was fun. Both games are for elementary school kids, and use learning as a way to win.

sillysentence

In Brain Quest Silly Sentence Word Fun, players work together using different parts of speech to create sentences. Players spin the spinner and pick from the noun, proper noun, verb, or adjective pile. If a wild card is drawn, he or she can pick from any pile. When a blank card is drawn, the player can write their own word within the category and place it on the board. Once the board has filled up with a card on each card space, the last player to draw gets to read the silly sentence that results. This game reminds me of Mad Libs in that by picking random words and placing them within the correct sentence structure, players create a coherent and silly sentence. I think this game is great for kids grades 1 and 2, and can see kids really getting into filling in the blank cards. The game is also a great language arts tool, as it teaches kids the difference between each part of speech, as well as proper sentence structure.

smartgame

Brain Quest Smart! Game is a trivia game that lets kids ages 6 to 12 (grades 1-6) play together, tailoring to each player’s individual knowledge level. The game covers five categories: Science, reading, math, arts, and the world. Starting with the youngest player, players take turns spinning the spinner to land on a topic. Another player then picks up a card from that category and reads the question beside the grade level of the spinner. If the spinner gets the correct answer, they draw a score token of the same category color. Once a player gets three score tokens of the same color, they can swap it for a letter token of the same color. Letter tokens bear the letters S, M, A, R, and T. The first player to collect all the letters to spell “smart” wins the game.

Smart! Game is a great choice for families, that will cater to each member’s level of ability and be fun for everyone. With the holidays right around the corner, this would be a great addition to a Thanksgiving family gathering with lots of young cousins, which, of course, usually consists of kids of all ages. With Smart! Game, families can spend quality time together with a game that everyone can play.
