Best Summer Toys Of 2016

Being a teenager is hard. Being a superhero teenager is even harder.

Embracing this concept, DC Super Hero Girls is a new interpretation of iconic DC Comics characters in an all-new high school setting. The new brand follows superhero characters—Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Bumblebee, and Harley Quinn—as they are learning to hone in on their super powers. Webisodes and a one-hour special on Boomerang have already launched, but the best part (of course) is the toys. Along with a line of action figures and role-play products, Mattel launched an action doll line that portrays these girls as classmates at Super Hero High.

The superhero magic begins before kids even take the dolls out of their plastic packaging. Each doll is posed differently, so Supergirl looks like she’s flying and Wonder Woman holds her Lasso of Truth high in-hand. The back of the box features a large cartoon and fun facts about the character inside, so kids can get to know their favorite superheroes better. The dolls also come with a Super Hero High ID card, which highlights the character’s super powers, skills, and biography.

While Barbie is the queen of fashion, the DC Super Hero Girls dolls are marketed as “action” dolls instead of “fashion” dolls, with body molds inspired by female athletes. Everything about the design of the dolls is impeccably thoughtful, from the attention to detail in their fingers to their clearly toned and muscular arms and legs (like seriously, everything about Wonder Woman is goals). The dolls are designed for high articulation in all of the characters, which is almost too good to be true. All of their joints move very smoothly, allowing kids to pose the dolls in tons of different ways for powerful storytelling. And, perhaps my favorite part, all of the dolls stand on their own, no doll stands required.

Their styles include elements from the original DC Comics superheroes and villains, but with a modern twist, with fun accessories that highlight the characters’ super powers. Wonder Woman sports her Lasso of Truth, wrist cuffs, a tiara, and wears a dynamic outfit that blends her iconic red, white, and blue colors, with stars on her pants and signature armor. Supergirl’s signature red cape can be molded for flight, wearing red and blue and the S-shield logo, while Batgirl comes with a bat-shaped backpack and a utility belt, while her outfit features a bat-inspired mask and hood. Harley Quinn wears a black and red diamond Harlequin-inspired print and mismatched fashion, and comes with her giant mallet that she can hold in her hand. Gorgeous, iridescent wings and a backpack come with Bumblebee, who sports a yellow and black ensemble with classic bee stripes, while Poison Ivy wears green with spindly details and garden flair, and carries bendable ivy vines and leaves.

All of the dolls clearly embrace the unique personalities of each character, and girls will be inspired to hone in on their own super powers. For example, Barbara Gordon uses her super smarts to reinforce the importance of STEM learning.

From a routine school day to a superhero adventure, the galaxy is the limit for kids, and the DC Super Hero Girls doll assortment is the epitome of #squadgoals. So what are you waiting for? Get your cape on!
