The latest in a line featuring Lego as the building block of elaborate universes, The Lego Movie Videogame, from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and TT Games, is fun for kids ages 7 and up. Similar to predecessors such as Lego Marvel Super Heroes, it has 3-D visuals and game play with lots of running around and smashing objects—although there are also cool “endless running/falling” levels, which might be the best thing in the game.
Anyone who has seen the title film will know the plot: The evil Lord Business has stolen a magical device called the Kragle, and only an ordinary construction worker/Lego figurine named Emmet can save the day. Emmet has a special wrench that lets him fix certain machines. Meanwhile, it isn’t long before other characters—each with their own distinct abilities—join him on his noble quest. The first is WyldStyle, who can perform acrobatic moves such as swinging across poles and climbing walls. Players have to use the right character at the right time; luckily, the game provides helpful clues to let them know when a switch is necessary.
As previously mentioned, there are “endless falling/running” levels in which the player can control Emmet’s direction as various objects rush by. They’re vertiginous, but not particularly long, making them the ideal level of challenge for those more familiar with Lego as toys than a video game series.
