There is a toy that most parents don’t think of when they are thinking of what to buy their three year old. But this is what blog posts are about, right? Helping us parents think outside the box? Strategize creative gift ideas for the 3-8 year old kids that apparently have everything?

So here is one to consdier. One day, I got in a prize pack, a mini-karoke machine. It had a microphone that attached to a main portable console that changed the pitch of any voice. It even was loaded with three ‘songs’ with which you could sing along. While it reminded me of what a gaggle of teen girls would sing to at a slumber party, it was appropriate enough for the younger crowd too.

My three year old loved it. Heck, I’m surprised I didn’t think of it sooner. What three year old doesn’t love to hear themselves talk – especially on a loud level. (I say it with love.) He had a blast with it, in and of itself. Then we started playing games with it too. I would hide and use the microphone to make funny noises as he tried to find me. Then he would do the same. We also pretended to be reporters, and he loved using the microphone to announce dinner to the rest of the family.

It has become a toy staple in our house. So the next time you are wondering what to bring to that four-year old birthday party, or that six year old’s party festivities, consider finding a similar gift. Just make sure to get one with volume control and an off-and-off switch. The one we have, the , has those features so my son has a blast making fire truck and police siren noises, I can keep the volume down so the neighbors don’t think we are having an emergency! And my 11 month old even loved it, making it an all-around household favorite.
