Kids can create pixelated, beaded masterpieces out of any photo they have on a smart device with the smART Pixelator, from Flycatcher.
smART Pixelator creations are made out of those iron-together beads you may remember from any summer camp that existed in the late ‘90s/early aughts. For those of you who remember the chaos of organizing and storing those beads — fear not! Flycatcher provides a super convenient storage tray and organizer for your beads. There is also a tool to help you pick up the beads and carefully place them so that you’re not accidentally bumping it with your hand and then getting stuck rebuilding your entire beaded cat from scratch! (Yikes!)
The smART Pixelator comes with an SD card with preloaded projects, but the real magic is when you connect it to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. Using the smART Pixelator app, kids can pick any design from the activities loaded into the app, or engineer their own project using any photo from their device. Want a beaded creation featuring your beloved pup? You got it!
When you’re finished creating any design, gently remove the tray from the smART Pixelator and place it on a heat-safe surface (i.e., an ironing board). Then cover it with the included ironing paper and iron the beads together until they show through the ironing paper (just like the good ol’ days). Once your design is cool, flip the tray and your beaded creation is all set! Pro tip: To ensure it stays together, you can also iron it on the other side. It’s not mandatory, but it’ll help.
If kids want to expand their creativity, they can also extend the fun past the 1,300 included beads with the pixel pegs or sequins, which are sold separately. There is also a bracelet creator set available, which allows kids to make their own bracelets.
