Back-to-school season is looking a little different this year as COVID-19 safety takes top priority for parents sending their kids off into the world.

Sesame Workshop has created a series of back-to-school safety PSAs, featuring Sesame Street characters promoting healthy habits, such as how to properly wear a face mask, washing your hands, social distancing, and navigating new hybrid learning environments. The series premiered last week with a mask-wearing Elmo and his father explaining remote learning and how to stay healthy in hybrid classrooms.

Governor of California Gavin Newsom unveiled the second PSA in the series over the weekend, starring Oscar the Grouch as the furry green character tells kids how important it is to wear a mask when out in public. “As parents, we tell our kids all the time about the importance of washing hands, staying 6 feet apart and wearing masks, but it just might register differently if those messages come from Elmo,” Newsom said in a statement. “We appreciate Sesame Street’s partnership during this critical time when parents and kids are preparing to return to school – many through distance learning.”
