A selection of recommended children's books for November 2020

It’s getting chillier by the day, making it the ideal time to cozy up on the couch with a good book.

Give your kids something imaginative to read this fall with some fantastic new books for them to get lost in. Even better, keep them busy over Thanksgiving break with these picks, all coming out in November. Read on to find out more about them!

The Little Mermaid by Jerry Pinkney is a reimagining of the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale about a mermaid princess who wonders about what lies above the water’s surface. In this version, Melody trades her voice for a potion that gives her legs so she can travel to the human world, where she makes friends with a young girl. She must make the choice to either stay with her friend or reclaim her true identity and save her family, while learning that you should never give up your voice for anyone.

Bedtime for Superheroes, written by Katherine Locke and illustrated by Rayanne Vieira, is a picture book for young kids fighting their bedtime routines. It shows how even the best superhero has to take a bath, wash their superhero clothes, and get some rest for another day of saving the world.

Find Fergus by Mike Boldt is an interactive story about a bear named Fergus who plays hide-and-seek with the reader, even though he can’t really get the hang of it. He tries hiding behind a tiny tree and in a crowd of bunnies and squirrels, but he always seems to be too large to stay hidden. The last two pages of the book fold out into a Where’s Waldo-style, panoramic look-and-find scene, and readers can try to find him and other silly details in the crowd.

The Couch Potato, written by Jory John and illustrated by Pete Oswald, is a picture book that teaches kids about balancing screen time and playtime. The Couch Potato has everything he needs within reach of his sunken couch cushion, but when the electricity goes out, he is forced to peel himself away from the comforts of his living room and venture outside.

Sylvia and Marsha Start a Revolution!, written by Joy Ellison and illustrated by Tesh Silver, tells the true story of Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson, the two transgender women who helped kickstart the Stonewall Riots and dedicated their lives to fighting for LGBTQ+ equality. It introduces kids to issues surrounding gender identity and diversity, and includes a reading guide and teaching materials to keep the conversation going.

All five books are available for preorder on Amazon and Kindle, or you can look for them at local bookstores in November.
