smartgamesCityMazetheGPSgameCity Maze: The GPS Game, from Smart Games, is one of those compact brainteasers that is perfect for stashing in a toy bowl on the coffee table. What I love about these types of games is that while at first glance they often look similar, each one has a unique method of play. City Maze: The GPS Game is a perfect travel-size game, as it’s thin and light and comes with a lid to hold everything together. The object of the game is to use the double-sided play pieces to create routes along the “streets” between the starting point and the destination.

I’ll admit, this one took me a few minutes to get the hang of, but when I figured it out I had a hard time putting it down. The game board adds to the challenge by including several curves in the “road,” and the 10 pieces are colored red on one side and blue on the other—but each route can only consist of one color. In the “On the Double” challenge book, players select challenges that require them to make routes in both colors, but can’t use one color to help with the other one’s route. Because there are two routes, there are half as many pieces to solve the puzzle. “Express Delivery” challenges require the player to make a route that passes through one destination before arriving at the final one. Both modes of play increase in difficulty as players get better, beginning with Starter challenges and moving up through Junior, Expert, Master, and Wizard. The solutions to each puzzle (there is only one solution per puzzle) are printed in the back of the booklets.

City Maze: The GPS Game is a fantastic mind twister that gets players thinking and problem solving. It’s great for car trips, relaxing at home, or bringing along for impromptu entertainment.
