It’s time for kids to flex their green thumbs!

Blue Marble’s National Geographic Herb Garden Growing Kit makes gardening inside a breeze. Designed for kids ages 6 and up, this STEAM kit makes it incredibly easy for little gardeners to plant, decorate, and watch their very own crop grow!

Parents will love that this gardening kit is so simple to set up. The kit comes with three stainless steel pots, a paint palette, paints, two paint brushes, and a sticker sheet for little artists to add their own flair. First, kids must drop the included peat pellets into three separate bowls and add warm water to watch them expand. This process takes about an hour and a half, so in the meantime kids can decorate their planters using the paint colors and stickers of their choosing.

After the hour and a half is up, kids can place the peat pellets in the planters and add the included seeds. The herb garden kit comes with a choice of chives, oregano, and basil — or kids can elect to use all three of the planters to grow all three herbs. It’s important to note that the instructions do not recommend mixing the seeds into the same planter. Because the seeds are so small, I’d recommend parental guidance to ensure they end up in the right space.

Once everything is set up, it becomes a waiting game. The plants do best in direct sunlight, so I’d recommend keeping them on a window shelf. Kids can water their plants everyday and learn the responsibility of taking care of something that’s alive. When I did this kit at home, it took about three days to see a sprout — an incredibly quick turn around! Little gardeners will feel satisfied seeing something they worked hard on come to life.

Don’t know anything about plants? Not to worry: The herb garden kit includes an illustrated learning guide that helps teach kids how plants grow. It also features kid-friendly instructions so little farmers — and their parents — can make sure they’re going about the process correctly. The guide also includes a growth chart spanning six weeks. Kids can track the progress of their herbs and add drawings or updates to each space.

For me, the best part about this kit is that it’s under $20. Kids get to learn all about plants, responsibility, and tasting the fruits of their labor all for a budget-friendly price. It can be hard to cultivate those hard skills without green space, but Blue Marble offers a creative, easy solution that helps steer kids onto a healthy, green path. Time to get planting!
