Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is right around the corner in May and Modi Toys has just the plush toy for your kids to celebrate.

Modi Toys is a South Asian-, immigrant-, and female-founded business that is launching the plush Laxmi Devi, modeled after the Hindu goddess of prosperity and fortune. She is shown carrying a “copper” kalash filled with gold coins and is sitting on a red lotus flower. According to Hindu theology, the pot of gold represents creation and abundance, while the lotus flower is a symbol of fertility because its roots are deep in the water.

This battery-operated lady luck sings five Laxmi mantras that kids can hear by pressing her belly. The plush toy is available in a medium size (11 inches) or small (7 inches), starting at $20. Gift-givers can also personalize the plush toy with a  name! Laxmi Devi is the perfect gift for Diwali or for those seeking some luck in their lives. The plush toy is available on moditoys.com, Amazon, Walmart, and Etsy.

For a more interactive learning experience, check out the matching board book Laxmi’s Diwali Dream Team. The book tells the story of Laxmi Devi selecting Uluka the owl as her vahana, or an animal that serves as a vehicle for a Hindu god or goddess. This story is about recognizing one’s worth and hidden talents, as well as shining light on those who might be too scared to speak up for themselves.

Written and illustrated by three South Asian women (Anjali Joshi, Avani Modi Sarkar, and Dejeshwini N), this story diversifies any bookshelf. Each page features vibrant colors and rhymes, making it a fun read for any young global citizen. Laxmi’s Diwali Dream Team is recommended for kids ages 3 and up and can be found on moditoys.com for $11.
