LolasWorldLearning is a fun adventure—or at least it can be with the right tools. Lola’s World, a upcoming educational app from BeiZ for kids ages 3 to 5, offers an educational experience disguised as a great adventure. Lola, an anthropomorphic panda who stars in a whole series of learning apps, invites young learners to board her airship for some island hopping and treasure hunting. But be forewarned: The adventure will require feats of mental agility, such as crossing rivers laden with hungry hippos, or solving puzzles at ancient temples. In this way, players get to practice and refine their ability at counting, sets, and other essential skills. Those who succeed are rewarded with gold coins, while those who fail—well, they can keep guessing until they get it right (It’s pretty low-stakes adventure, but hey, this is a little kids’ app, after all.)

Along with colorful animation and characters—and a learning experience that is pleasantly diverting as a result—what adds to the appeal of Lola’s World is how customizable it is. At the very beginning, young learners can choose among different animals as their avatar, dress them in clothes, etc. Later on, whenever the player is back on the airship, the aforementioned gold coins (the amount received depends on how well players perform on the missions) can be used to buy toys. There are also bonus mini-games during these periods of downtime: Players can make a sandwich and tap on the touchscreen to eat it, which proves to be a great way to work off some energy. Taking an in-game nap leads to counting sheep, with actual cavorting sheep that kids can tap on to count.

Lola’s World is subscription-based, with new mini-games, clothes, toys, and islands every second week. Other benefits of subscribing include a progress tracker, so parents can see how their children are improving over time. As it is, the app is entertaining enough that kids have an incentive to get better at their basic skills. Hey, those educational islands aren’t going to explore themselves!

Lola’s World is scheduled for release on September 25.
