It is rare kids find as much fun in unwrapping a toy as they do in actually playing with it, but half the excitement of L.O.L. Surprise! from MGA Entertainment comes with removing the dolls from the packaging.

Every L.O.L. Surprise! doll comes with a number of unexpected features that kids can discover as they unwrap each layer of fun. In fact, there are seven layers of surprises, including a secret message, collectible stickers, a water bottle, doll shoes, a doll outfit, a special accessory, and finally the doll itself.

The dolls are wrapped in layers of plastic that kids peel away one by one. Each layer unveils another accessory to go with the doll and bring it together, until kids reach the final layer when the doll is revealed. The suspense of discovering each layer only adds to the fun, and that mystery stays fresh with every doll unwrapped, whether it reveals a Surfer Babe or a Line Dancer.

The dolls are based on a world where babies are in charge of everything, and each of the dolls has a unique look. Outfit possibilities range from a Miss Baby pageant dress to punk rock threads, and the outfits can be mixed and matched between the dolls. The series is divided into eight different clubs, so kids could end up with the sparkly Queen Bee from the Gliterrati with their first doll and the Baby Cat from the Theater Club with the next.

The dolls live up to the L.O.L. Surprise! name. Kids can use the included water bottle to feed the doll cold water, and after it’s full the doll either spits up, pees, or cries with just a pinch of its head. Brace yourself, though, because the water gets some distance—my shirt learned that the hard way when one of the dolls spit up.

Some of the dolls even change color once they are submerged in cold water, and their style gets decked out further with funky makeup or sassy streaks in their hair.

Each doll truly has a style all its own. Even the water bottles vary from coffee cups to trendy mason jars (who knew cups could be trendy?). Their distinct looks and mix-and-match accessories set them apart from other collectibles, as do their many options for play. The pod the dolls are packaged in serves many different functions: kids can use it as a purse, a doll stand, a hangout area for the doll, or a bathtub to bathe the doll.

L.O.L. Surprise! is recommended for kids ages 3 and up, but keep in mind there are a lot of small parts, such as the shoes and the bottle, that are easy to choke on and should be kept out of reach of small children who would put them in their mouths.

Whatever their own personal style is, kids can collect all 45 L.O.L. Surprise! dolls to find the ones that suit them best and bring the baby-run world to life—if you can find them in stores, that is.
