Calling all wizards, witches, and even those muggles with ambitions of magical grandeur!
Even if they have not received a letter of acceptance from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, kids can hone their swishes and flicks with the Harry Potter Spellcasters Game from Pressman.
In this easy-to-play game, kids take turns casting spells and guessing which spell is being cast. Using the included Spell-Casting Cards, Spell Tiles, and Harry Potter’s iconic wand, kids will learn the moves required to cast spells that will be familiar to readers of the Harry Potter books or fans of the live-action film series. The wand will choose the youngest wizard or witch to serve as the first Spellcaster to start the game.
With Spell Tiles for two houses laid out on the table, players will attempt to identify the spell performed by the Spellcaster as determined by a draw from the deck of Spell-Casting Cards. If the spell is guessed correctly, the Spellcaster keeps their card, and the player who guessed correctly takes the corresponding Spell Tile and becomes the next Spellcaster.
Kids familiar with the Wizarding World will love that the cards are themed to the various Houses of Hogwarts. Here at our house, we have an 8-year-old Gryffindor and an 11-year-old Ravenclaw. They can’t resist playing the Spellcasters Game without getting fully decked-out in their full Hogwarts regalia, complete with additional wands that we already have on-hand. Their growing mastery of such magical pursuits makes for a fun game when a muggle (non-magical folks) like myself take part in a round.
“Daddy, that’s not how Wingardium Leviosa goes!” is not uncommon to hear, and my Geminio spell could use some work, but practice and recognition is a big part of what this game is all about!
Ultimately, the game will continue until only one Spell Tile is left. At the end, kids will count up their cards and the player with the most will earn the Barnabus Finkley Prize for Exceptional Spell-Casting.
For the record, I have not yet earned the prize, but I’m working on it.
