Now that it’s getting darker sooner, it means we are spending less time outside after school playing. Being inside and cooped up can be a recipe for disaster. This is why we started doing family game nights. Every Friday, we order a pizza and pick a game to play as a family.

We started doing this last year and had great success with the kids. It was a great opportunity to spend more time with the kids and have a lot of fun while doing it. However, doing the same thing every week can get old really fast so you have to change it up!

5 Family Game Night Ideas

5 family game night ideas

1. Classic Games: Old school game nights mean we play the games of our childhood. That means Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders are our picks for the night. Not only are these games classic but they can also reinforce what the kids are learning in school: colors and counting!

2. Gaming Night: While my oldest is obsessed with Minecraft, it’s not really a family game. So we shelve that for Family Game Night and hook up the Disney Infinity! I have to admit, I don’t know who likes Disney Infinity more: me or the kids. We love picking our favorite characters and building our own toy boxes. And with the new addition of the Super Heroes in the 2.0 Edition, the boys are all over this one!

3. Card Night: There are so many great card games you can play with the kids. All you need is a deck of cards to play Go Fish or Crazy 8s. If you want to go beyond the standard card games, you can pick up this great card game set, from Melissa and Doug. Games include Old Maid, Animal Rummy, and Go Fish.

4. Bingo Night: Who doesn’t like to play Bingo? The Melissa and Doug Picture Bingo is great for younger children, but still fun for the whole family. Some more of our favorites are I Spy! Bingo and Sound Bingo.

5. Old School Games: Games from our childhood are always being updated and reintroduced to the next generation. Some recent additions are Fisher Price’s Photo Discovery Game and  S’getti Scatter.
