caramelapple6I love caramel apples! Whether a dessert for a Halloween party or snacking for family movie night, caramel apples are fun and delicious to eat. While Halloween just wouldn’t be the same without a tasty caramel apple to chomp on, you don’t need to wait until the fall apple orchard season to buy these treats.

It is no trick that caramel apples are actually fairly easy to make in your own kitchen anytime you want. Enjoy these do-it-yourself directions for making A Geek Daddy’s Awesomely Scrumptious Caramel Apples!

caramel apple recipe ingredientsIngredients:
•Apples
•1 11 oz-package of caramel bits
•2 tbsp of water
•Wooden dessert or Popsicle sticks
•Sprinkles (optional, but recommended!)

Directions:
First things first: wash all of the apples, and then thoroughly dry them. For a more bite-sized option, instead of making traditional caramel apples, you could make smaller apple pops by segmenting an apple with a melon scooper. This is especially great for younger kids.

Spread the apples or apple chunks for your pops across the plate with the skin side facing down, and insert a dessert or Popsicle stick in each apple or apple chunk.

Place your caramel bits into a microwave-safe bowl, and add two tablespoons of water. Place the bowl in the microwave for two minutes on HIGH. Remove the bowl from the microwave and stir until the caramel bits are completely melted.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to use a microwave, you can also place the caramel bits in a medium saucepan and use a stove to melt the caramel. Add the two tablespoons of water and place the saucepan on a burner set at medium-low heat for three minutes.  Stir the caramel bits constantly until they are completely melted.

Next, act quickly and dip the apples in the caramel.  Use a spoon to evenly coat the apples and make sure their entire surface is covered with caramel.  Allow excess caramel to drip off back into your bowl or saucepan. Handle with care as the caramel will be very hot.

To add some extra flavor or texture to your caramel apples, add some fun sprinkles. While the caramel is still hot, spread the sprinkles on a plate and roll your apples across them.  You can also use crushed nuts, toffee, or M&Ms for a similar, flavor-enhancing effect.

Place the caramel-covered apples on your wax paper covered plate(s). Refrigerate for at least one hour. Remove your caramel apples from your refrigerator 15 minutes before serving.
