Last weekend, The Lego Group debuted its first jump into the cinematic world with The Lego Movie. The majority of this movie takes place inside a world made entirely of Lego bricks and minifigures—and according to the fun fact screens scrolling before the Warner Bros. press screening, the entire movie can actually be rebuilt at home from actual Lego sets. Special effects, smoke, water—everything was made out of bricks, which is truly nothing like you’ve ever seen before.
At times, this lends the movie to become somewhat of an extended Lego commercial for the adults in the audience; however, the movie is adorably entertaining for younger moviegoers. But that’s not to say this movie is dull for grown-ups. Some of the humor and pop culture references are specifically directed toward adults, keeping mom and dad laughing and just as engaged as little ones. The movie, of course, also has a heartwarming ending that is perfect for the whole family.
The story follows the journey of Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt), an ordinary Lego minifigure who is mistakenly thought to be “The Special” MasterBuilder, the most talented and most interesting person in the universe. Emmet is recruited by the other MasterBuilders, including Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman), and a whole cast of other familiar characters, to join a quest to stop the evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell) from gluing the universe together. (One of the most standout MasterBuilders is Batman, hilariously played by Will Arnett, who is a real big fan of bat puns and impressive sound systems.)
The story also carries a strong message about embracing creativity and individuality. The MasterBuilders have a special skill of building incredible things out of Lego bricks, but are considered dangerous to Lord Business because they build using their imaginations instead of using the instructions. Although the ensemble cast mistakes Emmet for “The Special,” in the end they learn that everyone is special because each of them, even the most seemingly ordinary, has a unique skill to contribute to the world.
And have no fear, Lego fans, Lego will release a whole line of building sets that include new minifigures and different universes that are featured in the film. Whether they build from their imaginations or according to the instructions booklet, kids will love to bring their favorite scenes from the movie into their own playrooms.
Also, you should be warned that you’ll be singing “Everything Is Awesome” probably forever and ever. That song is just so darn catchy.
