Backstory Cards is a game that creates backstories for roleplaying games. The concept behind the game is to blend characters and settings into one, creating a vibrant history and atypical relationships. The deck of cards will work with most roleplaying games, including GM-less ones.
To start the game, players will come up with basic character concepts for the setting, like groups, places, and events. While taking turns in a circle, each player will draw a Backstory Card and answer the prompt, leading to unexpected situations. Characters that wouldn’t normally know each other will interconnect, be expected to work together, and go on adventures in settings they aren’t used to.
Kickstarter donations range from $1 to $300 and prizes include a Print-and-Play PDF of Backstory Cards, decks of the game, and an online hangout to play a round. The project has already been successfully funded, but the campaign has five stretch goals. The first, Expansion Pack 1 for reaching $7,500 has been unlocked. If Backstory Cards reaches its second stretch goal, the Expansion Pack II will be unlocked. The other goals remain locked and unknown until they are reached.
