Pixlplay, from Pixl Toys, turns smartphones into a kids’ camera. Designed for ages 3 and up, Pixlplay is inspired by the classic 35 mm camera design and protects smartphones to allow kids to get creative behind the lens.
The Pixlplay has a built-in screen protector, an adjustable clamp, a wrist strap, and rubber grip to make it feel like kids are using a professional camera. There is a working shutter button that plugs into the headphone jack and a focus lens and film advance knob with clicking sounds to add to the experience.
Pixlplay is compatible with the built-in camera app for Apple and Android phones, but also includes an iOS app that lets kids put stickers, silly faces, and frames on their pictures.
Kickstarter donations range from $1 to $5,000 and prizes include early-bird pricing, a Pixlplay cameras, camera craft activities, a chance to sponsor the launch party, and a two-night trip to San Francisco. If the campaign reaches its $50,000 stretch goal, then Pixlplay purchases will include a set of activity cards teaching photography and a sticker sheet.
