piefaceshowdown

Just about a year ago, Hasbro‘s Pie Face went viral on the internet, with players all around the world taking turns placing their faces in a mask and closing their eyes (or wincing, in my case) in anticipation of getting a handful of whipped cream thrown in their faces. But this time around, your pie-faced fate is entirely in your hands.

Pie Face Showdown brings all the fun of the original Pie Face, but with a competitive twist. Instead of having a spinner to decide how many times players will twist the crank and randomly get pied, players will compete head-to-head and press a button in order to get the throwing arm on the other player’s side.

Putting the game together is easy as playing it, and all you have to do is insert the chin rests, throwing arm, and masks into their slots. Then, place some whipped cream directly onto the throwing hand. My recommended amount of whipped cream? Enough for a monstrous tower that’s ready to fall over. Leaning Tower of Cream-a, anyone? If you don’t have any whipped cream around, then don’t panic! Just like the original, this game includes a sponge that you can soak in water for a refreshing splash to the face in place of the sweet treat.

To play, two players rest their chins on the chin rests and look through the masks. On the count of three (NO cheating!), each player must rapidly press the big red button on his or her side. The faster a player presses the button, the further the throwing arm moves away from him or her.  When the hand gets too close on to the other side of the pie thrower, it’ll spring up, and the player will—as you guessed it—get pie faced.

Allegedly the player who doesn’t get pie-faced wins, but honestly, if you got pied, who is the real winner here? This whole experience is hilarious, and aggressively pushing the button over and over again as if it was to save my life brought me back to my Hungry Hungry Hippos days.

This game, did, however give me all the feels. I felt happy, anxious, stressed, and suspenseful all at the same time. If you feel the same way, then I recommend some comfort in thinking what I also told myself: “You signed up for this” and “It’s only whipped cream.” While the original Pie Face made me anxious enough because I couldn’t control it, this time all of the suspense came from me being able to control it. It’s #complicated.

There’s nothing to not like about Pie Face Showdown. I’ve always wanted to pie somebody a la the way every single cartoon character did while I was growing up, and this seems like the fair way to do it. And, if the plan backfires and you are the one who gets pied, then you deserve it. Not only can you potentially crush your opponent, but you get bragging rights basically forever.
