The classic game of “What Am I?” just got a makeover.

Hedbanz Electronic, from Spin Master, delivers as much hilarious and laugh-out-loud fun as the original, but now with a fast-paced, team-based version featuring an electronic host.

The game comes with two different colored headbands: blue and red, one for each team. Each team will delegate a “guesser” who must wear the headband, place one of the 80 cards on the headband, and try to figure out what the card says based on information given by their teammates. The headbands are adjustable (just like the back of baseball caps), so if you have a big head like me, all it takes is a quick adjustment to switch between players!

Players must figure out if they are a thing, animal, or job. Cards range from cupcake, to dog, to veterinarian, and there are a few different ways to figure out who or what you are. The multi-tasking electronic game unit keeps score, selects a random game mode, and acts as a timer.

To play, choose one of two modes: Team Party or Classic Hedbanz. In Team Party mode, everyone has a chance to be the guesser. Each guesser draws three cards from the draw pile and place one into the headband without looking. Press the game unit, and the round begins. The game will switch back and forth between the guessers on each team before the round is over, and it goes by so fast. Points are scored based on how fast the guesser determines what card is in his or her headband.

When playing Team Party, the electronic unit will select one of three different play modes: Ask It, in which the guesser asks yes or no questions until he or she correctly guesses the card; Describe It, in which teammates can give verbal clues to help the guesser out; and Do It, in which teammates have to charade and pantomime the word until time runs out—no sound effects or talking allowed! Three variations of play keep things fresh and fun each round.

In Classic Hedbanz mode, the goal is to be the first player with the most correctly guessed cards after three rounds of play. The concept of the game seems simple enough until the simplest of cards become super hard to describe and the whole thing just becomes hilarious!

The fun isn’t limited to just the given cards. Players can also add their own cards to the mix, featuring phrases, inside jokes, movies, songs, and more! When we played, senior editor Marissa made a card based on the best Halloween movie ever (non negotiable), Hocus Pocus, and senior editor Ali made a card based on her favorite character from The Office. Throwing your own cards into the mix makes the game more personable, especially when you are playing with an older audience.

When playtime is over, everything fits inside of the game unit, which is super easy to store under the coffee table for next time, or to take along for on-the-go fun.

I love the fast-paced nature of the party version of this game, and one of my favorite parts is the electronic unit, which keeps track of all the annoying things I typically get stuck doing, so players can just focus on crushing the competition playing the game. Hedbanz Electronic is truly staple for any family game night!
