How to Camp Indoors

Tuesday, April 9th, 2013

Spring has the promise of longer days and warmer temperatures, but depending on where you live, you are often reminded that it is still spring. Rainy days (sometimes snow days!), cool temperatures and, of course, the dreaded school vacations for parents. It can be a long time until summer, but there are ways to bring the summer fun a bit closer. In fact, you can bring it right into your house!

One weekend, or during school vacation week, tell the kids that they are going camping…in the family room! That night, set up a tent inside the house. If you don’t have a tent, or the budget for one, take some blankets and create blanket tents using a couple of kitchen chairs. Roll out some sleeping bags or put some blankets and pillows on the floor. If you have a fireplace, create a small fire. If you don’t have a fireplace, then light some candles for a similar ambience. If you have younger children and/or are concerned about open flame, purchase some flameless candles and group together on the floor for a fun, faux campfire. For dinner, make hotdogs and serve on paper plates. For dessert, make s’mores using an indoor S’mores Maker
that you can find online or in kitchen speciality stores. If you don’t want to make the investment, you can always serve s’mores ice cream! You can purchase chocolate ice cream, mini marshmallows and graham crackers. Crush the graham crackers and sprinkle, along with the mini marshmallows, on top of the chocolate ice cream. Yum!

Then have the kids get settled on their sleeping bags and turn out the lights. Give everyone a flashlight, which you can find for a few bucks at a dollar store or discount store. Then instead of video games or movies, read stories by flashlight or have each kid make up stories of their own. One fun game is to start telling a story and then pass it along to the next person to add to the story,  and so on and so forth. Then when the kids are sound asleep in their tents, you can slip into your bedroom for a good night sleep in your bed. No bug spray or SPF necessary.

Snow Cream Recipe

Friday, January 18th, 2013

by Charlene DeLoach of CharleneChronicles.com

With the holidays long over and spring a long time away, parents and kids need some fun to break up the winter. So if you can’t jet away from the cold and snow, then dive into it with this fun recipe for Snow Cream.

What is Snow Cream? The origins of a snow-based dessert go back centuries to villages in Europe, and it is dessert in which you mix snow and a sweetened dairy-based liquid to make a simple ice cream substitute. Here is what you need.

For 4ish servings, you need 1/2 gallon of (clean) snow (about 8 cups), 1/2 cup of sugar (more or less to taste), 1/2 tablespoon of vanilla, and 1 cup of milk. Put it in a large bowl. Mix it together until creamy. You can add other flavors like peppermint oil or cocoa powder instead of (or in addition to) the vanilla, or you can add ingredients like M&Ms, crushed candy canes, or chocolate chips.

In addition to the fun of eating the snow cream, make the act of making it a fun adventure too. Have the kids get the snow and add the ingredients, which are safe for even the little ones to handle. Have the kids be creative with ingredients to see what unique flavor they can come up with. For older children, have them name their new snow cream flavor and sketch a logo or design for their snow cream. Give them a camera and have them take pictures of their creations to post on Facebook or to email to Grandma. Or have them video a ‘commericial’ for their new snow cream flavor! Just make sure to eat it or put it back in the freezer before melts!

Enjoy!

Crayola’s Trace And Draw: Taking Creativity To New Levels

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

After 100 Years, Crayola is now bringing its creativity to the I-pad 2 introducing a new accessory/activity app called Trace and Draw. With today’s tech generation, the transition seems to be a natural one with kids today playing on tablets even as young as 2 years old.

Crayola’s “The Trace And Draw” is both a protective case and art station in one, so you don’t have to worry about getting fingerprints all over your screen. Surrounded by a shatter-resistant shell, the iPad 2 paired with Trace and Draw becomes an interactive art center.

This App has taken the idea of coloring and creativity to the next level, giving young artists more than 35 different characters to trace along with fun animations and activities that provide hours of creative play; perfect for keeping little ones entertained on those boring rainy days, long waits at restaurants or doctors offices and long car rides!

Celebrating Martin Luther King Day and Inspiring Kids Dreams

Monday, January 17th, 2011

.

When you hear the name “Martin Luther King” undoubtably one of the first things that pops into your head is “I had a dream”. It was an incredibly moving speech that changed our country’s history perhaps even more than Dr. King realized at the time.

.

Today our children learn about Dr. King and his “I had a dream” speech from a very young age, and we came across an Martin Luther King craft that we wanted to share.

I Have  A Dream Children’s Craft

It’s important to teach kids exactly why they have the day off today. This craft could be a great conversation starter.

While talking to them about Dr. King, this craft also teaches children to realize their dreams, no matter how small.

It sends a great message of inspiration and we love that.

So today, while you are home with your kids take sometime to pop over to Activity Village and learn how you and your kids can make your own “I have a dream” poster.
